Frequently Asked Questions

What do I do if I have information on a crime?

When concerned citizens observe or have information regarding a crime covered under one of our programs, they may anonymously send information to NYS Crime Stoppers by calling our anonymous tip line at (866) 313-TIPS (8477). The information will be forwarded to the appropriate law enforcement agency(-ies) in the jurisdiction where the alleged crime occurred.

In an emergency, please dial 9-1-1 immediately.

I am concerned about my privacy if I submit a tip. Do callers remain anonymous?

If an anonymous tip directly leads to the arrest and conviction of the suspect or fugitive, and contains information that law enforcement did not already obtain through their own investigations, then the caller who provided the tip becomes eligible for the reward offered. The Board of Directors is solely responsible for determining eligibility and its decisions are final.

Which tips are eligible for a reward?

If an anonymous tip directly leads to the arrest and conviction of the suspect or fugitive, and contains information that law enforcement did not already obtain through their own investigations, then the caller who provided the tip becomes eligible for the reward offered. The Board of Directors is solely responsible for determining eligibility and its decisions are final.

If you don’t know who I am, how do I claim my reward?

Callers must obtain their Confidential Identification Number (CID) at the time they call and retain that number in order to receive their reward, if eligible.

The reward must be claimed within two (2) years from the date the CID is originally issued.

How are reward amounts determined?

Once a month, the NYS Crime Stoppers Board of Directors, which consists of carefully selected community volunteers, meets to review all active cases and to determine reward amounts. The Board’s decisions are final, and no other person(s) or entity shall have any input or influence over the manner or amount in which rewards are paid.

I want to increase a reward amount. Can I make a donation for that case?

Yes, with the prior permission of our Program Director. To increase the amount of our reward offering for a particular case, you may make a non-refundable donation to NYS Crime Stoppers, of which 80% will be added to the reward intended, and 20% will be applied to our operating expenses. No exceptions.
